cambodia education

An interesting UNESCO report on education in Cambodia: compulsory until 14 years old now and enrolment and teachers doubling in the last 20 years.

I doubt the full picture is quite as rosy as that in many of the rural villages.

Thailand and USA charity giving

I’m surprised at a table on charity giving from USA to Asia: c.$50M and only c.$5M of that to Thailand with 41 funders – about the same as Australia. I thought the figures would have been far higher than that, maybe the emphasis is on government-to-government aid.

Kent school and tropical diseases

1,233 drugs introduced between 1975 and 1996 and only 13 aimed at tropical diseases.

In 1998 the world spent $70B on health research but only £300M was aimed at an HIV vaccine and only $100M for fighting malaria.

Does the world really need another verruca cream or athletes foot cream?

Goal 6 of the UN Millennium Development Goals is finding cures for HIV, malaria and TB plus miscellaneous diseases such as sleeping sickness and dysentery and cholera.

Even provision of condoms and malaria nets to prevent HIV and Malaria seems too difficult for most of Africa and what are Victorian diseases.

St Peter-in-Thanet school have asked us to consider a presentation on Thai food and their charity work as part of their Big Lottery World programmes.

Thai cool school charity

A very interesting article on Teachers Day in thailand and a charity for Thai schools near Phuket which arranges teacher training/volunteer programmes within the Thai schools. We'd eventually like to get to this stage once the first dozen schools are built.
